Researchers acknowledge that low self-esteem and negative body image can affect young people long before their teenage years. Positive body image has been identified as an important part of emotional well-being and there is increasing evidence to suggest that body dissatisfaction is associated with negative consequences.
However, there are very few resources aimed at tackling these issues in younger children. In response to this, Deirdre Cowman and Deirdre Ryan have teamed up with Bodywhys to launch a resource suitable for primary school children. ‘The Magnificent Toby Plum’ aims to promote self-acceptance and encourages young people to embrace and appreciate differences. This fun and engaging story is brought to life by Isabel Reyes Feeney’s beautiful illustrations.
